Black Majesty
The night started off with local heroes Black Majesty. Surprisingly, the opening crowd was quite substantial, as many patrons arrived early to catch a glimpse of the local heroes. They didn't disappoint as they offered and wowed the local crowd with an amazing set. I was hoping to hear some new material from the band's forthcoming album, but sadly they didn't budge.
Fan favorites like 'Silent Company' and 'Dragon Reborn' were genuinely well received by everyone in the venue.
Danny from Eyefear came up on stage to duel with Gio on the classic 'Guardian'. Many Cynic and Edguy fans who were unfamiliar with Danny were literally blown away at the length of his amazing hair and vocal talents, and I'm sure those fans gained the admiration of both Danny and Black Majesty that night. Black Majesty's set was relatively short, but very solid.
Black Majesty setlist:
Tomorrowland
Dragon Reborn
Silent Company
Forever Damned
Guardian
Fall of the Reich
Cynic
Next up were Cynic. This was the first time I ever heard Cynic live and I truly wasn't disappointed. Their sound bordered on a hybrid of Tool and Death. Even that familiar sound of Death's jazzy bass-lines were present. I really enjoyed these guys, more so for their open minded music which questioned their reality and existence, as their lyrics were reminiscent of Tool's "Third Eye" or "Parabola". Their sound was perfect in every way and quite literally came off as what you would hear if you listened to them on their albums. Just pure perfection.
Sadly though, a lot of people couldn't get into their music as the majority of the crowd were power metal fans, but they still put on an amazing set and are pure perfectionists when it comes to music.
Cynic setlist:
Nunc Fluens
The Space For This
Evolutionary Sleeper
Celestial Voyage
Veil of Maya
Adam’s Murmur
King of Those Who Know
Textures
Nunc Stans
Integral Birth
Edguy
Finally came the time to witness Edguy. Edguy have been to Australia quite a few times but I didn't really appreciate their music until the later part of 2007 and was grateful to finally see them live on stage in my home town. They have always enjoyed coming to Australia and are one of many select few power metal bands from Europe that have made their way down to Australia several times with success. As soon as the band burst out on stage people were meserised by both the band's wacky stage antics and Tobias Sammets over the top stage attire which reminded me a little of what Joacim Cans wear on stage with Hammerfall, yet not as ridiculous.
The band's child like attitude and non stop energy made this a pure highlight of the night, as Edguy kept the whole venue in high spirits. Their latest single 'Speedhoven' was well received, yet I honestly didn't realise how many people loved Edguy until I saw them in Melbourne that night.
The band's set was just amazing and to top it all off, Edguy did a 20 minute encore with Tobias using 10 minutes of that to explain a story of when the band made their way to San Fransisco and came across a transsexual hooker which Dirk supposedly pick up. All harmless fun of course, and that's what make Edguy so special. They can poke fun at themselves have a good time and not take anything to seriously.
Tobias did mention they'd be back very soon. Finger's crossed we see them again very soon in Australia.
